I would love to tell you that there is a magical cure for acne but I would be lying. The intent of this article is not to mislead but to educate people both men and women on the “do’s” and “don’ts” of acne prevention. You see, the reality is that like many other diseases, there is no permanent cure for acne; acne comes and goes as it pleases. However, with that said, there are number of acne prevention techniques you can adopt to prevent acne from rearing its ugly head in the first place and keeping your skin looking clear and beautiful.
Most of the acne prevention techniques I will talk about are just plain old common sense things people neglect to do. For example, washing your face daily with mild soap and lukewarm water will prevent much of acne from forming on your face or forehead. However, many of us acne sufferers get too busy with our daily chores that we completely neglect to follow this simple yet very effective acne prevention technique. Regular face washing helps to remove much of the bacteria and acne causing debris. However, keep in mind that over using this technique can irritate your skin and make your skin condition worse.
Another acne prevention technique which in opinion is much underutilized is “regular cardiovascular exercise”. Not only does regular cardio exercise consisting of 20-30 minutes of Stairmaster or treadmill keep your body moving
and fit, it forces your body to sweat; which in turn helps to unclog skin pores and prevent acne from flaring up. If you are not the “Gym Buff” type, and let’s face it, most of aren’t, consider adding “brisk walk” to your daily routine. Another acne prevention technique you may already be aware of or in my case guilty of is “popping unwanted pimples”. Given how easy it is to pop a pimple, resisting the temptation can be very difficult; but you must. The reason for this is simple, when you pop a pimple; you are helping the bacteria spread to uncontaminated skin areas allowing acne to spread. In addition, popping a pimple can make the acne wounds worse and can cause severe scarring.
Drinking 6-8 glasses of water is perhaps the simplest technique for preventing acne. Regular supply of fresh water helps the body remain healthy and hydrated. This helps the body fight many diseases including acne much more effectively. When the skin is kept hydrated, it does not dry out and start to shed. Shedding is one of the common causes of acne formation as it leads to clogging of the skin pores by dead skin cells.
Despite your best effort, you may come to a point where none of the aforementioned acne prevention techniques are effective at eliminating your acne. When this time comes, you need to seek sound advice from a medical professional such as your family doctor or a skin specialist such as a dermatologist. Another option you may consider is using a natural herbal acne treatment.
